Context:
Rights management has long been a fundamental capability of DAM but the rise of AI has elevated it from an operational requirement to a strategic priority.
Nevertheless, ‘Rights Management’ doesn't always get the attention it deserves. Today's questions extend far beyond simply asking, "Can we use this asset?".
What’s needed:
Organizations must now understand whether an asset can be used to train AI models, generate derivative content, be transformed or adapted by generative AI, distributed across multiple channels, or combined with other licensed material.
Organizations need confidence that they can prove where an asset originated, how it has been modified, who has accessed it, and whether its use remains compliant throughout its lifecycle.
What must be done:
As AI-generated and AI-assisted content becomes commonplace, there is a greater emphasis on provenance, transparency, and governance. Capabilities such as immutable audit trails, AI usage policies, automated rights validation, consent management, content authenticity standards, and metadata-driven compliance are becoming essential rather than optional.
