Session 1: Introduction to Controlled Vocabulary

This first session addresses the core principles of what controlled vocabulary is, why it matters, and how it's used by different organizations. With a growing need for better knowledge management practices, it’s vital for organizations to understand where controlled vocabulary sits in the wider metadata landscape, and how to make the most of metadata before deciding upon new products and services. Structured metadata (including controlled vocabulary) is an essential pre-requisite for content-rich organizations exploring AI automation. This session provides the foundational knowledge needed upon which to explore more practical, real-world case studies and examples as the course progresses.
Session 2: Real life case studies (what works, what doesn’t and why)

Built around real-life case studies, Session 2 explores the challenges faced by teams when managing metadata and evaluates various tactics and solutions for building controlled vocabularies that are relevant and effective. Learn how to spot common pitfalls before they happen, and the practical approaches needed to overcome them.
Session 3: Take control! Practical participatory session with peer-review and course leader supervision

The approach we’ll take is “learning by doing”. This session is a hands-on, participatory session where attendees will build their own controlled vocabulary, work with peer review, and gain expert guidance throughout. Benefit from direct practical experience of controlled vocabulary development, plus feedback from your peers and course leader.
Prior to the live interactive workshop, attendees will have the opportunity to submit examples and queries from their own organizations. These will be used as reference material during the session, creating an opportunity to ask questions and start creating a controlled vocabulary framework for future development.
Session 4: Review and course summary

The final session ties together the key learnings from preceding sessions. By now, attendees will recognize where they are in their controlled vocabulary journey as well as understanding what the next best steps should be. Through the combination of taught delivery and peer collaboration, participants will have a holistic view of the subject, along with a framework controlled vocabulary that can be iterated and expanded upon beyond the course.
